New Day One attendance record

Monday, January 1, 0001 - by B.B. Branton

UTC junior and No.6 seed Nick Soto used a reverse and a third period escape to defeat Brian Crutchmer (Okla State), 3-2 to advance to Thursday morning's championship quarterfinals (9 a.m.)

Soto advances to the quarterfinals for the second time in three years and will face No.3 seed David Thorn.

Re-Match: Soto dec. Thorn in 2012 Scuffle semis.

In the first period, Soto did an excellent job of countering a Crutchmer takedown attempt for a 0-0 score at the end of one.

Soto reversed in the second for a 2-0 advantage, but Crutchmer (10-9) chose neutral to start the third period and tied the match with a takedown.

Soto was able to escape for a 3-2 lead and then held off the Cowboy down the stretch for the win.

11 Straight Wins: The Moc junior has an 11-match win streak heading into the quarterfinals ... he also advanced to the quarters in 2012 on the way to a second place finish.
