Fire caused considerable damage to a house on Missionary Ridge late Thursday night.
The Chattanooga Fire Department received the alarm at 11:46 p.m. and responded to 140 North Crest Road with Engines 5, 13, 15 and Ladder 4.
Captain Ron Gilbert said the firefighters did an excellent job of containing the fire to an upstairs bedroom in the large, two-story house. Though the fire damage was contained, there was a lot of smoke and water damage to the rest of the house. The dollar loss was estimated at around $120,000 for the structure and its contents, which included many collectibles and antiques.
Dr. William Greer and his wife Betty were home at the time. Mrs. Greer was the first to discover the fire in the bedroom, in the vicinity of the bed. Both got out of the house safely after calling 9-1-1.
Captain Craig Haney with the Fire Investigation Division said the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, most likely from careless smoking.
