Harrison Will Gives Happy Christmas To Many Chattanoogans

  • Monday, December 9, 2002

A number of Chattanoogans will have a happy Christmas provided by the will of Coca Cola Bottling magnate J. Frank Harrison, who died last month.

He left his personal assistant a million dollars.

Another woman got $100,000, and a house maintenance employee received $50,000.

A $300,000 trust fund was set up for the son of a female friend.

Mr. Harrison's will outlines many other bequests ranging from $1,000 to $50,000 for many friends and employees.

Mr. Harrison, who got into Coca-Cola bottling through his Lupton relatives and made a large fortune, left the bulk of his estate to his son, J. Frank Harrison Jr., of Charlotte, N.C., and two daughters. The daughters are Anne Harrison Wells, and Deborah Starr Harrison, both Chattanooga residents.

He gave his home at 13 Minnekahada Place in Riverview to the three children.

Mr. Harrison left his 196-acre farm in Riverview to the daughters. It is near Bright School and the former Rivermont Golf Course.

He directed that his yacht be sold. He said his Coca-Cola Bottling Consolidated should have the first opportunity to buy it, saying it "would make an ideal corporate facility." He said Burkey Mooney should be retained as overseer of the yacht.

Mr. Harrison had a large collection of fine autos that are kept in Chattanooga. He gave the children the right to select one each - except for the Ferrari F-50. He said the others should be sold, and the children would have the first right to purchase them.

Mr. Harrison also had a "lot of memorabilila, mostly Coca-Cola material." He said in his will he wanted these items preserved. He said trustees might pass them on to his Coca-Cola Bottling Consolidated firm, the Coca-Cola Company or to an appropriate museum.

The $1 million bequest went to Dorothy B. Jones, his longtime "faithful assistant and advisor." She was with Mr. Harrison when he died in his downtown office and reportedly tried to revive him.

Her husband, attorney Sam Jones, was given $10,000.

Mr. Harrison left Mary Whittle $100,000.

The house maintenance employee who got $50,000 is Lottie Burris.

Mr. Harrison set up a $300,000 trust for Daniel Baker, a Covenant College plumber and Covenant graduate who is the son of Gwen Baker, an Erlanger Medical Center employee.

A $50,000 trust is for Clayton Henson and another $50,000 trust for Anna Henson.

Mr. Harrison named six co-executors of the will for the estate that was listed as "more than $2 million."
They are the three children along with attorney John W. Murrey III of St. Paul, Va.; Dorothy B. Jones and Reid M. Henson.

The will says, "I came into the world naked, with nothing. I am leaving the world with Jesus Christ. Everything I have is on loan from Him. I tried to be a good steward in managing the assets He has placed in my hands. You must do the same. Thus, I require that anyone appointed as an executor or trustee must be a believing Christian. A believing Christian must believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God the Father and practice such beliefs."

Mr. Harrison died Nov. 26 at the age of 72.
