Driver's Safety Awareness Week In East Ridge

Tuesday, February 26, 2002

The City of East Ridge is sponsoring a Driver’s Safety Awareness Week on March 4-8. The theme is “Getting Behind the Wheel in ER…Because We Care.”

There will be free seatbelt checks at each of the five public schools in East Ridge during this week.

Those interested in the seatbelt checks should contact one of the following schools: East Ridge Elementary, East Ridge Middle, East Ridge High, McBrien Elementary or Spring Creek Elementary. Students at these schools will also receive special instruction about seatbelt safety and other driver awareness topics.

The Driver’s Awareness Safety Week is in partnership with the Michael Appleby Keeping Us Safe (MAKUS) Foundation. Michael, a teen-ager, recently lost his life in an automobile accident. Law enforcement officials say wearing a seatbelt could have made a difference.

A video about the MAKUS Foundation will air on Cable Channel 3 on the following dates:

Saturday, March 2 12:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Sunday, March 3 12:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Wednesday, March 6 8 p.m.

Organizers of the week’s events are the East Ridge Education Committee, City of East Ridge, East Ridge Police Department, Hamilton County Highway Safety, East Ridge public schools and the school resource officers.

Debates Don't Decide Leadership Ability

I've watched how some in the media have attacked Scottie Mayfield for not debating. I've never been to a debate, and I am not going to vote for someone because they are able to remember and recite from memory, the well crafted answers they came up with the night before.   Often times, candidates focus on attacking each other instead of influencing undecided voters on any ...
