Alexander Calls On Democrats To Make Tax Cuts Permanent

Monday, April 29, 2002

Nashville, Tenn. - United States Senate candidate Lamar Alexander today called on Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle to schedule President Bush's tax cut for a Senate vote and pass it to make it permanent.

"Senator Daschle, like so many liberals, treats tax cuts as if they were gifts from the government," said Alexander. "In fact, tax cuts are a matter of you getting to keep a little more of what you've earned. When you do get a tax cut, chances are you'll pay down debt or put it into savings. Multiply
that by all the taxpayers in the country and the economy gets a shot of adrenalin."

Because of a quirk in the law, the tax cuts expire in ten years. The
Republican controlled U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill to make them permanent. But the Senate's Democrat leader, Tom Daschle, has said he will never allow the Senate to vote on it, the Alexander campaign said.

Alexander explained that he favored President Bush's tax-cut plan because it reduces rates for every taxpayer, it doubles the child tax credit and it ends the Death Tax.

"Liberals don't like tax cuts because they require restraint in government growth," said Alexander. "You and I like them for that very reason. President Bush's tax cut plan is the right policy for families, for small businesses and for creating jobs."

"The Bush tax cut vote is one example of why this United States Senate race in Tennessee is so important," concluded Alexander. "The Democrats control
the Senate by one vote. If the Republicans do not hold this seat, we have no chance of regaining a majority in of the Senate."

"My vote in the Senate will support the agenda of George Bush. Bob Clement's vote in the Senate will support the agenda of Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton."
