Event: The District 6 Town Hall Meeting on Education will take place this evening. Superintendent Jesse Register, School Board representative Janice Boydston, the District 6 principals and other staff will answer questions on all facets of Hamilton County’s school operations. Parents, community residents and other public education stakeholders are invited to attend. Schools targeted for this forum include Chattanooga Middle, Center for Creative Arts, Dawn School, East Lake Academy, East Lake Elementary, Eastside Elementary, Lookout Valley Elementary and Lookout Valley Middle/High. The school system has hosted a town hall meeting in each of the nine School Board. The District 6 meeting is the final forum of the school year.

Event: Parents of rising kindergarten students who will attend Brown Academy this fall are encouraged to pre-register their child for school. School officials need to see the child’s birth certificate, social security card and immunization record. Brown Academy is one of two new downtown magnet schools opening this fall.

Event: Center for Creative Arts is presenting its first Choral Benefit Concert featuring performances by the school’s choir, former students Harve Wileman and Crystal Hollins as well as a special guest appearance by the Chattanooga Choral Society for the Preservation of African American Songs. Proceeds will be used to benefit school programs and educational projects.

Event: High school student athletes from Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences will celebrate team and individual accomplishments during a special athletics banquet.

Event: Third-grade students from CSLA will board a bus to take a whirlwind tour of the Scenic City. They will visit famous landmarks and popular spots around town. The tour will end on Tuesday with a trip to Raccoon Mountain for an end-of-the-year outing.

Event: Ballroom dancing at Hixson Elementary? Yes. The school’s spring music concert will feature the fifth-grade strings ensemble as well as ballroom dancing by second-grade students. The youngsters will waltz to the Austrian national anthem, Edelweiss, as part of their ballroom dance instruction. Following this performance, the fifth-graders will give their final concert of the year featuring a solo by concertmaster Katie Xu.

Event: School volunteers from Orchard Knob Elementary will enjoy an appreciation cruise aboard the Southern Belle. This event is to honor the school’s volunteers for their hard work and commitment to students and teachers all year long.

Event: Before Soddy-Daisy High seniors leave their high school days behind, they will reunite for a senior picnic this evening. This will be the last time the young people get together before graduation, so there will be lots of laughter and tears, fellowship and fun.

Event: The fifth-grade class of Howard Elementary will take part in the annual D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony. The Drug Awareness Resistance and Education program teaches youngsters effective strategies for saying no to drugs, alcohol, violence and other harmful lifestyle choices.

Event: The boys and girls at this school will release some energy as the participate in field day activities. The youngsters will compete in several events - but it will all be friendly competition!

Event: The school’s fifth-grade chorus and handbells will be in rare form as they present a patriotic program at the monthly PTA meeting.

Event: The district's alternative school will have its annual Recognition/Appreciation Reception to honor students, volunteers and other school supporters. Hamilton County’s only full-day alternative school serves students in grades 7-12 from across the county. Washington focuses on student behavior and academics with a goal of transitioning students back to their zoned school.

Place: Hamilton County Courthouse/Commission Meeting Room
Event: Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Jesse Register and staff will present the 2002-2003 budget before County Commissioners as part of the county’s budget hearings this week. School officials will present a budget that includes $1.1 million in proposed cuts for the upcoming school term. School Board members, educators, parents and other public school stakeholders are expected to attend.

Event: Kindergarten students from Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences will spend the day meeting different animals and species at the local zoo.

Event: Buns the bunny rabbit is hopping by CSAS to share adventures of his travels. "Buns Travels Across America" is a book designed to teach youngsters about U.S. geography. While touring with Buns, children learn all about numerous American landmarks. CSAS students are "hoppy" about Buns' visit.

Event: Howard Elementary is hosting its school awards day program for fifth-grade students. These youngsters will receive awards for academics, athletics, character and other achievements.

Also at 11:30 a.m. at the Riverpark, there will be a schoolwide picnic for all award recipients to enjoy.

Event: The entire student body will assemble on the school’s front yard for a special flag dedication ceremony. School officials say they are honored to receive an American flag that was recently flown over the nation’s Capitol. This gift is made possible by state Rep. Zach Wamp. In addition to the flag raising, there will be an Honor Guard, patriotic music by the fifth-grade chorus as well as a presentation on proper flag handling and etiquette.

Event: The faculty and staff are hosting a parent volunteer breakfast to say "thank you" to all of the parents and other school volunteers. These volunteers have served in various capacities throughout the school year to help enhance the learning environment for students. They tutor struggling students, assist on field trips, staff the copy machine and much more!

Event: The head of the class from Chattanooga School for the Liberal Arts will enjoy a retreat at Harrison Bay as they prepare to end the school year. These eighth-graders are savoring the last days of middle school as they look forward to the challenges of their high school careers.

Event: Buns, the bunny rabbit, is coming to Hixson Elementary! "Buns Travels Across America" is a book designed to teach students about U.S. geography. Touring with Buns allows students to learn about various American landmarks and ignites their pride in America. As the youngsters follow Buns, the students’ imaginations will be captured by this extraordinary rabbit. Buns will also be available to autograph books for the Hixson Elementary girls and boys.

Event: It really is a small world after all at Rivermont! The school is hosting its Small World Festival, a culminating activity to a yearlong study of distant countries by each classroom. The festival will feature plenty fine cuisine and student projects on display.

Event: The school is hosting an honors banquet for seniors to recognize them for their outstanding accomplishments during their high school career.

Fabulous Features

The choirs of Brainerd High recently took their talent on the road as they traveled to Texas and Mississippi for several performances. Choir members brought home several honors as they competed in the American Classic Tour and Festival held in San Antonio, Texas. Those honors included first-place at the premier level of performing as well as two second place awards at the premier level of performing.

DuPont Elementary was awarded the Mary Jo Clark PTA of the Year at a recent banquet sponsored by the Hamilton County Council of PTAs.

Middle College High School at Chattanooga State is now accepting applications for enrollment for the fall term. Middle College High is a Hamilton County Schools program located at Chattanooga State. The program serves students in grades 10-12 who have potential, but who are not successful in a traditional high school setting. Students here can earn both high school and college credit. Students from Ooltewah Middle recently participated in the Tennessee Project Citizen competition and brought home the first-place award for their "Water Closet War" project. The project will be on display at the National Council of State Legislators conference next month in Colorado. The students will now compete at the national level.

Ooltewah High has lots to be proud of. The school’s JROTC program received an overall score of 992 out of 1,000 points for a rating of 99.2 percent; the school’s band received superior ratings at the State Concert Band Festival; the Chamber Choir captured 1st place in the Fiesta-Val Competition held in Orlanda, Fla.; and senior Kevin Burke was selected as the Chattanooga Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes Athlete of the Year. Way to go, OHS!


Dorm Wars Competes For Charity

The fight for the title of “Dorm Wars Champion” will begin Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. in Lee University’s Walker Arena. Ten residence halls come together to compete in a number of races and games in the annual Dorm Wars Competition. Prosecutors Asking Maximum Sentence For "Evil" Mother Of Jesse Mathews

Prosecutors are asking that the mother of the man charged with killing Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin be given the maximum possible sentence, calling Kathleen Mathews an evil manipulator who encouraged Jesse Mathews' criminal endeavors. Mark Phillips Was Victim In Fatal Hixson Pike Wreck

Mark Phillips, 54, was the victim in a fatal Hixson Pike wreck on Saturday afternoon. Police said the driver of the Ford F150 that went out of control and struck the Phillips vehicle was 68-year-old Warren Elliott.
