Football Player May Have Been Caught In Crossfire

Wednesday, November 26, 2003

The University of the South football player from Hixson who was shot near an Athens, Ga., nightclub may have been caught in the crossfire of rival groups.

A club owner told the Athens Banner-Herald that competing groups often gather outside clubs and trash talk one another.

The owner said some of the group members believed the fatal shot may have been intended for them.

Police said 18-year-old James Phillip Cole was about 100 feet from where some 300 young people were congregated.

He had gotten separated from two fellow University of the South friends who had gone with him to Athens for the weekend.

Several police officers were near the area, but none witnessed the shooting.

Police said there was no indication an altercation preceded the shot.

The funeral for the student was Wednesday at Baylor School, where he attended and played football.
