Stephen Ball Is New CSAS Principal

Barnes, Burk, Goss, Hixson, Morgan Also Get Assignments

Stephen L. Ball, who has been principal at Tyner Academy the past six years, is the new principal at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences.

He replaces Wilhemina Moore, who is retiring.

Supt. Jesse Register also announced five other principal changes.

He said in a memo to the County School Board, "It gives me great pleasure to present to you six new principal assignments for 2003-2004. These school leaders are veterans that bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to their new assignments. These assignments will be effective July 1, 2003, and include the following:

- Stephen L. Ball, Principal, Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences. Mr. Ball is a 20-year veteran educator who was hired into the Chattanooga Public Schools in August 1996 as an assistant principal. He has served as principal of Tyner Academy for the past six years, successfully leading them as a magnet school dedicated to the theme of math, science and technology.

- Devota C. Barnes, Principal, Sale Creek Middle/High School. Ms. Barnes returns to Sale Creek after serving as principal of Daisy Elementary for the past ten years. She is a 30-year veteran educator. Her tenure includes teaching positions at Ooltewah Elementary and Falling Water Elementary. She has served as a principal at Mowbray Elementary, Red Bank Elementary, Sale Creek School and Daisy Elementary. Ms. Barnes previously taught four years in the Sequatchie County Schools.

- Lea Ann Burk, Principal, Lakeside Academy. Ms. Burk comes to Lakeside after serving as an assistant principal at CSLA for the past year. Her teaching career includes service at Normal Park, Hillcrest and CSAS. Ms. Burk has also previously served as a school facilitator and a consulting teacher at Lakeside. She is a 26-year educator with prior experience in the Whitfield County Schools.

- Carol J. Goss, Principal, Tyner Academy. Ms. Goss moves up to serve as principal of Tyner Academy from her current position as assistant principal. She has over 19 years as a teacher and administrator in the Hamilton County School System. She began her career in 1984 as a teacher at East Ridge High. She then moved on to serve as a principal trainee at various locations followed by the
position of assistant principal at Ooltewah Middle School and then principal of East Ridge Middle until assuming her current position in November 1999.

- Susan H. Hixson, Principal, Big Ridge Elementary. Ms. Hixson began her career in November 1979 as an itinerant speech therapist for the Hamilton County Schools. She provided speech services to Red Bank Elementary and taught in the classroom at Thrasher Elementary. Her administrative tenure included serving as a principal trainee at Clifton Hills, Lakeside and Shepherd Elementary. At Shepherd, Ms. Hixson continued her administrative career serving as both assistant principal and principal. Ms. Hixson has completed over 24 years as an educator.

- Gail C. Morgan, Principal, Shepherd Elementary. Ms. Morgan began her educational career in August 1976 at Calvin Donaldson Elementary. While serving at Donaldson, Ms. Morgan held the positions of principal trainee, lead teacher, and assistant principal. Ms. Morgan is a 27-year veteran educator and most recently served as assistant principal at Lakeside Academy.

Dr. Register said additional assignments will be made as necessary at a later date.

Mark Phillips Was Victim In Fatal Hixson Pike Wreck

Mark Phillips, 54, was the victim in a fatal Hixson Pike wreck on Saturday afternoon. Police said the driver of the Ford F150 that went out of control and struck the Phillips vehicle was 68-year-old Warren Elliott.
