Many Paying State Sales And Use Tax Via Internet

Wednesday, August 06, 2003

The Tennessee Department of Revenue recently launched an online sales and use tax-filing service that has already brought in more than $2 million in sales and use tax revenues that were filed electronically, officials said.

It is accessed via www.Tennessee.gov, the state's official website.

"Tennessee businesses are discovering how convenient and easy it is to file their tax returns online," said Tennessee Department of Revenue Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. "In fact, more than 300 businesses registered for our e-filing option in the first 30 days, which is a convenience we offer to enhance customer service and increase efficiencies."

Online payments can be made with electronic funds transfers and are processed through Tennessee.gov's secure payment server. All taxpayer data filed electronically or on paper with the Department of Revenue is confidential data protected under Tennessee law.

Businesses and citizens can currently file Hall income taxes, professional privilege taxes, and sales and use taxes through the Tennessee.gov Web site. Information about motor fuel tax electronic data interchange is also available online at www.Tennessee.gov.

The Department of Revenue collected $7.4 billion in state taxes and fees in the 2001-2002 fiscal year, which represented 92 percent of the state's total tax revenues. In addition to collecting state taxes, more than $1.4 billion in local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2001-2002 fiscal year.

The online sales and use tax service was built by Tennessee Information Division, a subsidiary of eGovernment firm NIC (Nasdaq: EGOV) that manages Tennessee.gov on behalf of the state.
