Wommack, Kocsis Named SoCon Track Performers Of The Year

Sunday, February 29, 2004

Chattanooga junior Shannon Wommack dominated the women’s distance events and was named Southern Conference Indoor Track Performer of the Year for the third consecutive year. Steven Kocsis won both of his events and added men’s Indoor Track Performer of the Year to his resume, and freshman Kathleen Turchin earned her second SoCon Freshman of the Year honors with three second place finishes. The women were second behind Appalachian State and the men placed fourth with Western Carolina edging two-time champs ASU to claim the title.

Wommack continued her dominating performance in the women’s distance events by claiming the mile (4:55.61) and 5,000-meter (17:40.19) titles, adding to the 3,000-meter championship that she won on Saturday. With her three titles this weekend, Wommack repeated as the Women’s Indoor Track Performer of the Year. Fellow Lady Mocs distance runner Kathleen Turchin, who placed second behind Wommack in all three events, was named Freshman of the Year. Sophomore Lanni Marchant was third in the 5000m (17:53.53) and freshman Nettie Halcomb was fourth in the mile (5:08.45).

Kocsis reset the school record Sunday in his title run in the 5000m (14:41.89), adding to his school-record 3000m title he won Saturday. Sophomore Ian Mayne took third in the 5000m (14:57.25). Robert Hatcher won the men’s 800m (1:55.85) and sophomore Colin Sullivan was fourth (1:56.95). Sullivan took second in the mile (4:14.75), Linas Salkauskas was fourth (4:18.14) and junior Gediminas Banevicius was sixth (4:21.17) in the event. Freshman John Barlew placed third in the men’s high jump at 6-04.50.

The SoCon changed the 55m dash and hurdles to 60m distances this year for both the men and women. Chattanooga sophomore Latavia Shores brought home a third place finish in the 60m dash at 7.72 followed by freshman Carita Cole in fourth (7.75). Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
