Woman Killed As Heavy Rock Dropped From Freeway In Knoxville

Tuesday, May 25, 2004

A 69-year-old woman who was a passenger in a car was killed early Monday morning at Knoxville when a 10-pound rock was dropped from a freeway overpass.

Authorities said Barbara Hensley Weimer, was almost home after going to a graduation exercise in West Virginia.

She was a passenger in a Pontiac Aztec driven by her son-in-law. Her daughter was in a back seat when the rock came through the windshield and hit Ms. Weimer in the head about 1:30 a.m.

Authorities said a tractor-trailer behind the Weimer vehicle was also hit by a rock, but the driver was not hurt.

Police said they would step up surveillance on the Knoxville overpasses.

The rock was dropped from the Brushy Valley Drive overpass of I-75 as the Weimer vehicle went northbound.

The freeway was closed for about a half hour after the incident.

Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
