Cheerleaders Arriving For Big Competition

Competition To Draw 18,000 People To Convention Center

Thursday, January 13, 2005

Cheerleaders began flooding the city on Friday for a major competition that gets underway on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Convention Center.

Mike Martinez of Athletic Championships of Knoxville said some 6,000 cheerleaders are signed up.

He said counting judges, parents, relatives and friends, there will be some 18,000 people involved. But everyone won't be at the Convention Center at the same time as the competition is staggered throughout the day.

Competition continues on Sunday.

Mr. Martinez said it is the fifth year for the cheerleading competition in Chattanooga and the second biggest.
He said, "Last year was bigger. We changed the date and that hurt us some. But it is still big."

Competitors, 90 percent of whom are girls, come from 10 different states.

Mr. Martinez said there are 13 other such competitions across the country, "but Chattanooga is the biggest and has the most prestige. They want to come to Chattanooga and win because it is the biggest."

Among those competing are school teams, recreational squads and club teams. There will be some 350 teams competing for 50 national titles.

Mr. Martinez said the visitors have booked 5,500 room nights. Some of those taking part are having to bed down in Cleveland and Dalton.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)

Notre Dame is moving on.   The Irish advanced Monday night when steady Steadman Ford drove a stake in the Chargers’ heart, draining a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left as No. 4 seed Notre Dame defeated fifth-seed Chattanooga Christian, 41-38, in District 7-AA tournament action in Phifer Gymnasium.   It was a thriller.   Notre Dame (10-14) ...
