Kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, hang gliding, mountain biking, and the many other outdoor activities available throughout the region, will be featured to the world as a new outdoor magazine for Chattanooga and surrounding areas "xplor magazine" kicks off this spring.

During a media conference Tuesday afternoon, Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker and Rob Healy, Executive Director of Outdoor Chattanooga, announced the production of xplor magazine, a 64-page publication for outdoor novices and enthusiasts, published by Chattanooga based True North Custom Publishing.

"Outdoor Chattanooga was created last year after more than 800 individuals from across the region participated in public meetings and provided great ideas for creating a blueprint to make the outdoors a signature lifestyle for our community," said Mayor Corker. "Outdoor Chattanooga is now fully operational and the creation of xplor magazine is another way of driving home the numerous outdoor amenities that exist in this region for our citizens and others throughout the country."

The mission of Outdoor Chattanooga is to make outdoor recreation an attractive, healthy, and distinguishing lifestyle for Chattanooga's residents and visitor population. This, in turn, will maintain and enhance the value of the region's natural and built resources, and help grow the region's economy.

xplor magazine supports Outdoor Chattanooga's goal to promote healthier lifestyles and involvement in outdoor activities. The publication will be packed with useful and insightful articles that reflect the varied outdoor activities in our region. Included in the magazine are three in-depth features focusing on outdoor activities performed on land, in the water, and in the air. Secondary features will include environmental and educational issues. xplor will also offer a current listing of outdoor activities, the newest places to hike or mountain bike, and the gear you'll need to get there.

An exciting and energetic publication, xplor has already attracted substantial interest in our region. The magazine will launch to 50,000 readers and is expected to grow to 100,000 by 2006.

Subscription to xplor will be free and those interested in receiving the publication may do so by emailing Sheryl@xplormag.com. xplor welcomes photography and article submissions. Please e-mail xplormagazine@truenorthcustom.com for submission guidelines.

xplor magazine will deliver on March 17. An outdoor event to launch the magazine is scheduled for March 16 at Coolidge Park.

Rep. Vince Dean has picked up papers to run for the Senate District 10 seat now held by Democrat Andy Berke. And Rep. Tommie Brown picked up papers to retain her District 28 seat. Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
