East Ridge Fire-Rescue units responded quickly on a blaze Friday afternoon and were able to save a two-story house.

Firefighters responded at 4:08 p.m. to a reported house fire at 1521 East Ridge Ave. They arrived within two minutes of the alarm to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the basement and garage area of the residence.

A fast interior attack was initiated to cut the fire off and prevent it from spreading to the interior of the home. Neighbors praised firefighters' quick response. One neighbor told fire officials there was so much fire and smoke he was afraid the house would burn completely down.

Firefighters were successful in saving the interior living areas of the house and limited fire damage to a basement room and garage area.

While crews were attacking the fire, other crews began a primary and secondary search of the house to make sure no residents were trapped inside.

There were no reported injuries and damages were estimated at $30,000 from fire damage in the basement and smoke damage in the living areas.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by East Ridge fire/arson
investigators, but appears to be electrical in nature.

East Ridge Fire-Rescue responded with three engines, one ladder and two support units including Engine 1, Squad 1, Engine 2, Ladder 3, Support 7, Rescue 9 and Battalion 1.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
