Terry Stulce, candidate for third district congressman, in response to comments by Zach Wamp published in the Chattanooga Times Free Press on Oct. 26, released the following statement:
"As a Veitnam combat veteran who gets his medical care through the V.A., I was happy to see the plans for the expansion of the outpatient clinic in Chattanooga. I hope it will alleviate long waits for the medical care that so many veterans need.
"However, I was very disappointed that Mr. Wamp's only reported response was that he expects patient numbers to decline by 2012.
"I was also very disappointed that Mr. Wamp did not take this opportunity to express the gratitude of all of us in the 3rd Congressional district for the sacrifices of all veterans, and
especially those men and women serving in Iraq.
"Many local men and women have served proudly in the Iraq war. They deserve to have all their medical needs met, including hospital care. Mr. Wamp does not seem to mind that veterans have to drive up to 200 miles for outpatient surgery, specialist care, or major surgery.
"The Bush people and Mr. Wamp seem to be in denial about the thousands of casualties that have been suffered by so many. It has been said, ‘In war, there are no unwounded soldiers.’ Let's stop denying the obvious. This problem will not simply go away."
Mr. Stulce is a former airborne ranger who is a decorated Vietnam veteran. He served two tours in Vietnam, one with the 101st Airborne Division and one with the 69th and 79th Border Ranger Battalions. His combat decorations include the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Bronze Star with "V" device for valor and the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in Ground Combat.
