Hixson Teenager Apyan Wins Ira Templeton Chattanooga Open Title

Youngster Edges First-Round Leaders Van De Griff, Deck By One Shot

Tuesday, June 07, 2005 - by Stan Crawley

Paul Apyan, who led Hixson High to a state championship last fall and signed a golf championship with Southern Miss, claimed the championship of the Ira Templeton Chattanooga Open on Tuesday.

Apyan added a 3-under 67 to the 5-under 65 he shot on Monday and edged former UTC golfer James Van De Griff and Ringgold’s Chase Deck by one shot in the tournament that included a field of 139 amateurs and professionals.

Knoxville’s Jeff Golliher finished two shots back and Ooltewah’s Mike Bennett and defending champion Josh Nelms were three shots behind.

Van De Griff, an assistant pro at Holston Hills in Knoxville, took low pro honors, just ahead of Ooltewah’s Bennett.

Apyan works with sports psychologist Charles Plott from Alabama, who has worked with McCallie sensation and University of Georgia signee Adam Mitchell.

The 18-year-old Apyan birdied Nos. 13, 15 and 17 as he headed to the clubhouse.

“I feel like my game’s improving,” Apyan said. “I can’t wait to get down to Southern Miss.

“I used to worry about making bogeys. But working with Charles I’ve learned not to worry about them. Even if I miss a green, I’m trying to chip the ball in for a birdie. It’s a different mindset.”

SENIORS: Neil Spitalny of Chattanooga won the senior division with scores of 66-65-131 -- three strokes ahead of Kingsport club pro Mark Houser.

Randy Smith: Tim Daniels’ Big Shadow

I remember the first time I ever met Tim Daniels. It was in his first season as the head football coach of the Red Bank Lions; the first of back to back 2-8 seasons. Considering he had replaced coaching legend Tom Weathers, after that second season, I came to the conclusion he wouldn’t be there much longer. Boy was I wrong!   He was a bit timid in that first interview I ... (click for more)

We Are Blessed To Have Ron Littlefield As Our Mayor - And Response (2)

Chattanooga is blessed beyond measure to have Ron Littlefield as our mayor.  It is a total travesty our city has had to endure the long frivolous battle with absolutely  no foundation other than disagreement with policy issues.  It has always been a vendetta directed personally at Mayor Littlefield which, if the "interveners" decide to appeal, will be a proven fact.   ... Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
