Soddy-Daisy's Rende Wins City Junior Golf Title

Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - by by special report to The Chattanoogan

Soddy-Daisy’s Derek Rende shot a 3-under 68 and won the City Junior Golf Championship on Wednesday at the Valleybrook Golf and Country Club.

The multi-talented Rende, whose home course is Valleybrook, finished at 76-68—144, good enough for a five-shot victory over Brandon Moore (76-76—149). Rende earned the victory despite a triple-bogey on No. 12 on Tuesday and a double-bogey there on Wednesday.

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe’s Scott Melton, who held the first-round lead at even-par 71, was disqualified for turning in an incorrect scorecard on Tuesday. It was determined he played the wrong ball on one hole.

The other division winners on Wednesday were Patrick Price (83-87—170) in Boys 12-13; Blake Davidson(76-74—150) in Boys 14-15; Jordan Britt (77-78—155) in Girls 12-14; and Brittany Marcum (111-97) in Girls 12-14.

Rende, the son of former major league baseball player Sal Rende, will be a senior this fall at Soddy-Daisy High School. He is also a basketball and baseball standout for the Trojans, but says he wants to play golf in college.

“Other than No. 12, I hit it pretty good,’’ Rende said. “No. 12 is a hard hole, but not that hard.’’

The 18-year-old Rende had birdies on Nos. 1, 4, 5, 8 and 11 on Wednesday.

“I really had a good front nine, then we had a rain delay and I kind of cooled off,’’ he said. “I’ve been working on my swing with Hunt (Council Fire pro Gilliland), but hadn’t been playing that good before this tournament.

“I’ve not changed anything big, just some mechanics. This was a really good win for me.’’

Rende will play in the Metro Championship this weekend at Council Fire, and then will try to qualify for the U.S. Amateur next week in Lenoir City, Tenn.

We Are Blessed To Have Ron Littlefield As Our Mayor - And Response (2)

Chattanooga is blessed beyond measure to have Ron Littlefield as our mayor.  It is a total travesty our city has had to endure the long frivolous battle with absolutely  no foundation other than disagreement with policy issues.  It has always been a vendetta directed personally at Mayor Littlefield which, if the "interveners" decide to appeal, will be a proven fact.   ... Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
