Kip Henley Finishes At 7-Under To Win Don Malarkey Open

Defending ChampBruce Ledford Takes Low Am Honors

Tuesday, August 23, 2005 - by by special report to The Chattanoogan

PGA professional Kip Henley from Crossville shot a 3-under 68 in the second round Tuesday, finished at minus 7 and won the Don Malarkey Open at the Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club.

Henley edged pro and former UTC golfer James Van De Griff (Knoxville) by a shot and pro Aaron Feyes (Lookout Mountain) came in third after finishing at –5 under par.

Low amateur honors went to two-time defending champion Bryce Ledford (Ooltewah) who shot the low round of the day with a 66. He was one shot better than amateur Tyler Neff (Knoxville), who finished at –3 under par for the tournament.

The Open was played at the 6,100-yard par 71 Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club. Amateurs and professionals came from across the state to compete in a event which honors Don Malarkey “Old Pro”, member of the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame and Pro Emeritus at Signal Mountain G&CC.

The oldest living member of the PGA of America started the event named in his honor with a ceremonial tee shot. At the age of 100, Don Malarkey teed the ball up to begin the Don Malarkey Open.

PGA professional Gary Robinson (Hermitage) carded two rounds of 1-under par and won the Senior Division. He edged local amateur Ron Johnson by a shot after Johnson shot a 69 in round two to claim the Low Senior Amateur Division.

Pro Tim Rush (Memphis) finished at +1 for the tournament to tie pro George Newbeck (Maryville) for third place overall and second place in the Professional Division.

Alexian Villages of Tennessee (Signal Mountain) was the title sponsor of the event, which is in its 22nd year.

Randy Smith: Tim Daniels’ Big Shadow

I remember the first time I ever met Tim Daniels. It was in his first season as the head football coach of the Red Bank Lions; the first of back to back 2-8 seasons. Considering he had replaced coaching legend Tom Weathers, after that second season, I came to the conclusion he wouldn’t be there much longer. Boy was I wrong!   He was a bit timid in that first interview I ... (click for more)

We Are Blessed To Have Ron Littlefield As Our Mayor - And Response (2)

Chattanooga is blessed beyond measure to have Ron Littlefield as our mayor.  It is a total travesty our city has had to endure the long frivolous battle with absolutely  no foundation other than disagreement with policy issues.  It has always been a vendetta directed personally at Mayor Littlefield which, if the "interveners" decide to appeal, will be a proven fact.   ... Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
