Taco Bell Robber Runs Into Tough Customers

Rifle Wrested From Him, He Is Knocked Unconscious By Woman With Pole

Tuesday, August 30, 2005

A rifle-wielding robber got more than he bargained for when he tried to hold up the Taco Bell at 6210 Lee Highway early Monday morning.

Police arrived on the scene to find the robber lying on the floor unconscious.

Officer Thomas Buttry said he was told the suspect walked out of nearby woods with a rifle and pointed it at Elizabeth Giamportone and Rebecca Giamportone, who were standing outside the business waiting for an employee to get off work.

The man ordered them inside the business and directed that they and an employee, Mr. Stokepole, lie down on the floor.

Officer Buttry said the store manager, Greg Gimber, then walked up front to see what was going on. The robber directed that he get all the money and give it to him.

The manager laid the money on the counter, but the robber began arguing about "getting the rest of the money."

The officer said the robber lowered the rifle at one point, and the manager grabbed it from him and held him up against a wall. Mr. Stokepole got up and punched the robber several times in the face.

The robber fell to the ground, then pulled a knife out of his pocket and began waving it.

The officer said at that point, Elizabeth Giamportone got up, picked up a metal pole, and began hitting the robber in the head until he dropped the knife and fell to the floor unconscious.

The robber was taken by ambulance to Erlanger Medical Center. He was treated prior to being taken to the Hamilton County Jail.

Police said he had no identification on him and he refused to give his name.
