Curtis Adams To Switch To Jeffrey Wilson To Break Deadlock

On District 5 School Board Replacement For Charles Love

Tuesday, September 27, 2005

Saying the deadlock needs to be broken on the District 5 County School Board seat, County Commissioner Curtis Adams said he will change his vote on Thursday.

Commissioner Adams, who has voted thus far in favor of Andrea Smith, said he will switch to Jeffrey Wilson.

He said both are good candidates.

There have been six different votes - all the same. Commissioner William Cotton has passed. Commissioners Adams, Bill Hullander, Fred Skillern and Lou Miller have been for Ms. Smith. Commissioners Richard Casavant, Charlotte Vandergriff, Larry Henry and Greg Beck have been for Mr. Wilson.

Another vote is set for Thursday morning.

Commissioner Adams said, "With two equally qualified candidates for the open school board seat in District 5, we have one commissioner, William Cotton, shirking his duty with his refusal to vote. This leaves the County Commission with a four to four deadlock after six votes.

"I see no end to this deadlock and it's making our commission appear to be unable to reach a decision on a matter of extreme importance. This is contrary to what is best for our commission, our county government and more importantly, the citizens of District 5.

"If we continue this action, it places the remaining members of the commission in the same boat with Commissioner Cotton.

"Since I am the senior commissioner, I feel it is my sworn duty to break this deadlock and will do so Thursday as I cast my vote for Jeffrey Wilson. I urge my colleagues on the commission to have a solid eight votes for his appointment.

"Andrea Smith has been my choice from the beginning of this process, but it is evident we can’t secure that fifth vote to place her on the School Board.

"We are fortunate to have a man of Jeffrey Wilson’s caliber to fill this position. When you have a four to four deadlock after six votes, someone must move and it is I that will make that move.

"I also feel we should remove this burden from our newly elected leaders, Chairman Larry Henry and Vice Chairman Greg Beck, and give them our support to insure they are successful during the remainder of this year."

Mr. Wilson is a probation officer at Juvenile Court.

The seat became open after Charles Love resigned after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges.
