Pancake Sets State Record With 8-Under 64 As DII Tournament Opens

English Shoots 66 As Baylor Girls, Boys Lead Team Competition

Tuesday, October 10, 2006 - by by special report to The Chattanoogan

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – It was quite an opening day for the Baylor girls and boys Tuesday at the DII state golf tournament at the Old Fort Golf Course.

"You could say we let the hounds loose,'' Baylor coach King Oehmig said.

Baylor’s Brooke Pancake, a junior, and two-time defending state champion, broke the 18-hole individual scoring record by firing an 8-under 64 in taking the first-round lead.

Pancake’s effort helped lead the Baylor girls to a 14-stroke lead over GPS entering Wednesday’s final round. She combined with teammate Morgan McQuary, who shot a 74 on day one, to give Baylor a first-day team score of 138, which is tied for the lowest 18-hole team score in state tournament history.

Meanwhile, Baylor senior Harris English shot a 6-under 66 in taking the first-round lead. The defending state champion’s first-day score tied for the fifth lowest 18-hole individual score in state tournament history. His front nine score of 31 was the second lowest 9-hole score in state tournament history.

English combined with Stephen Jaeger and Jay Vandeventer, who each shot a 69, as well as freshman Keith Mitchell’s 71 to give Baylor a team score of 275, an 18-hole team score state tournament record. The previous record of 278 was also set by Baylor in 1995 at Henry Horton State Park. Baylor has 12 overall titles and is trying to win its fourth consecutive state title.

The Red Raiders lead Montgomery Bell Academy at 15 strokes entering Wednesday’s final round.

BAYLOR GIRLS: Pancake birdied six holes on the back nine to start the day at 5-under through nine with a 31. She birdied three of the first six holes on the front nine and shot par on the last three holes to finish with the record score of 64.

The previous state tournament record was held by Sarah Jacobs of Davidson Academy, who shot a 67 at Old Fort in 1998. Pancake’s 64 is also the course record at Old Fort.

The 36-hole individual state tournament record of 139 was set by Elizabeth Dotson of Creek Wood in 2002 at Old Fort. Davidson Academy shot a 138 on the second round of the 1998 tournament at Old Fort. Baylor is vying for a record 12th consecutive and overall state golf title.

"Brooke played the back nine first and was 5-under at the turn,'' Oehmig said. "Then she just kept it going. She drove it well, hit her irons well and putted well. She had it all going.''

Leigh Henderson of Knoxville Webb finished day one with a 3-under par 69 and is in second place, five strokes behind Pancake. University School of Nashville’s Callie Nielson is in third with a 70.

BAYLOR BOYS: English shot a 31 on the front nine without making a birdie. He had consecutive eagles on Nos. 4 and 5, holing second shots of 100 and 80 yards.

"It was just an incredible thing,'' Oehmig said. "Hard to believe that could be done on back-to-back holes.

"Our boys were 12-under after the first nine holes. They were disappointed after losing the region championship to Webb and really got into focus.''

Jaeger and Vandeveter, along with MBA’s Rob Campbell, are each tied for second and three strokes behind the leader heading in to day two. Montgomery Bell’s Campbell combined with Dylan Burroughs’ 71, to finish day one in second place with a team score of 290, 15 strokes behind Baylor.

"Today was an awesome thing to behold,'' Oehmig said. "Honestly, I wasn't that surprised. I knew we had a great team that just hadn't broken through and gone so low.''

Oehmig said he will have a "pow-wow'' with the boys and girls Tuesday night.

"We're not going to take anything for granted,'' he said. "This is golf. This is teen-agers playing golf. It's very unpredictable.''

We Are Blessed To Have Ron Littlefield As Our Mayor - And Response (2)

Chattanooga is blessed beyond measure to have Ron Littlefield as our mayor.  It is a total travesty our city has had to endure the long frivolous battle with absolutely  no foundation other than disagreement with policy issues.  It has always been a vendetta directed personally at Mayor Littlefield which, if the "interveners" decide to appeal, will be a proven fact.   ... There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
