Southern University will celebrate 50 years of nursing with two big events this Sunday.
Lori Futcher, Marketing and University Relations, stated, "With a nursing shortage affecting the country, Southern Adventist University has helped keep Chattanooga’s shortage to a minimum by bringing in nursing students from across the country and around the world, many who stay and work in Chattanooga. This year, as we celebrate 50 years of nursing education at Southern, more than 500 students are preparing for their associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees in nursing."
Disaster Preparedness Training Workshop will be offered on Sunday from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., in the Iles P.E. Center, Southern Adventist University. Included in the workshop:
•Simulated crisis custom-made for the local area will be presented on three screens.
•More than 300 participants will be seated in small groups, discussing how to handle the unfolding crisis.
•Training designed for community healthcare professionals and emergency personnel to prepare them for facing a crisis situation in our area.
•Keynote presentation “Lessons Learned from Katrina: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” will be given by Christopher O’Conner, a healthcare administrator who worked in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina.
Golden Anniversary Gala will be on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at The Chattanoogan. The program willl include:
•Students modeling vintage nursing uniforms.
•Keynote speaker Thomas W. Merry, M.D., Captain US Navy, formerly responsible for all medical needs in post-war, southern Iraq.
•Epic Brass, a quintet from New England.
•Fundraiser for a nursing building expansion project, scheduled to begin in 2007.
Florida Hospital in Orlando, Fl., is the presenting sponsor for the gala.
