Library Gets Beer Permit For "ClubLib"

Thursday, October 05, 2006

The spirits will flow at the Bicentennial Library on Oct. 21 as the library holds its first-ever on-premise fundraiser.

Library Executive Director David Clapp appeared before the city beer board on Thursday to pick up a temporary beer permit.

He said the library auditorium
"will be turned into a nightclub" for the event that will also feature a sports bar.

Mr. Clapp said sponors have already contributed $70,000 toward the event.

Library officials earlier said they might have to cut services due to a fund shortage.

"ClubLib: Liberating the Library" will be from 7:30 until 11 p.m.

Officials said they "will break all the rules by transforming a traditionally serene space into a dynamic nightclub – ClubLib. Complete with a Sports Bar, CyberCafe, Relaxation Lounge and Dance Club, this event will turn the stacks upside down. Attendees can check out fabulous fare and liberal libations, but the only thing silent that evening will be a one-of-a-kind silent auction."

There will be a cyber lounge featuring back and neck massages, he said.

Mr. Clapp said ClubLib "will raise much-needed funds to make state-of-the-art enhancements to the library’s current audio-visual department."

Monique Berke and Alison Lebovitz are co-chairing the event.

“We are honored that two such capable and creative people agreed to chair this event,” stated Mr. Clapp. “The committee is comprised entirely of community leaders whose vision has made ClubLib a reality”

Club Lib is presented by Chattem. Other sponsors include BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, BellSouth, the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Clarity, Comcast, Chambliss Bahner & Stophel, First Tennessee Bank, Fletcher Bright Company, Raymond James & Associates, Sunny 92.3 and 96.5 The Mountain.

Tickets for Club Lib are $50 for general admission and $85 for VIP, which includes valet parking and express check-in.

If you would like purchase tickets to Club Lib by mail and are paying by check, please make your check payable to Friends of the Library and mail it to the library at 1001 Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402.
