Publix Grocery Chain Moving Into Chattanooga

$10 Million Store To Be Built At Hixson Pike, Cassandra Smith Road

Monday, October 09, 2006

The Publix grocery chain is moving into Chattanooga.

Officials on Monday said a $10 million Publix is planned near the Creek's Bend Golf Course in Hixson.

Lee Freeman, vice president of a development firm that will build that unit, said Publix has approved a second local store to be built at an undisclosed location.

"They would like to build more stores (than the two)," he said.

The city-county Planning Commission on Monday afternoon approved the Hixson store that will be built on 10.9 acres at the corner of Hixson Pike and Cassandra Smith Road. It will also be next to the Word of Life Church.

The city is currently served by BI-LO, Food Lion and Aldi, and Wal-Mart has become a main player in the local grocery business.

The Hixson Publix will have 54,340 square feet and create 250 jobs. It will add $500,000 in sales tax and $185,000 in property tax annually.

There will also be 24,000 square feet available for general retail.

Some nearby residents said they are in opposition based on traffic concerns. Mr. Freeman said a turn lane will be added that will reach the first store entrance on Cassandra Smith Road, though not the second.

Officials said Cassandra Smith Road will be widened and improved.

Mr. Freeman said his firm, Wilwat Properties, has built Publix stores in Nashville, Atlanta and Florida.

He said it is hoped to start the Hixson store next June and have it open in the third quarter of 2008.

Several Planning Commission members said they welcome the addition of the Publix stores here.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
