The students at Tennessee Temple Academy are well familiar with the biblical story of David slaying Goliath. And this edition of the Crusader football team is proving to be a giant killer as well.

Temple finished the regular season 10-0 and starts the playoffs Friday night at Finley Stadium.

The Crusaders were honored during Wednesday's meeting of the County Commission.

Commissioner Curtis Adams noted that Temple does not have a home field and practices on a vacant lot.

He said all of the coaches are volunteers - including former Tennessee great Chip Kell.

Temple only started a football program in recent years after long dominating on the basketball court.

Commissioner Adams said Temple was going along well this season, then had to face perennial power South Pittsburg. The Pirates, like Temple, had not lost a game all season. No problem - Temple won 53-20.

The Crusaders are led by a Skogen, a family better known for their prowess on the hardwood. Seth Skogen is a candidate for Mr. Football.

Temple squares off this Friday night at Finley Stadium against Monteray (6-4)

Winner of that game plays in the second round of the playoffs against the victor in the Trousdale County (6-4) Lookout Valley (8-2) game.

Roy Exum: A Coach’s Jailhouse Plea

Years ago, once when famed Alabama football coach Bear Bryant was reflecting on his success, he spit a fleck of tobacco off his tongue and summed it up with a laugh, “Aw, all it boils down to is being able to talk an 18-year-old into making a decision in 15 minutes.” Since then, college recruiting has reached the point the University of Tennessee now budgets $2.3 million a year ...
