Postal Employee Charged With Opening Packages Containing VA Medication

Thursday, November 16, 2006

A Chattanooga postal worker has been charged with opening packages and taking Veterans Administration medicine.

Lynn Mari Williams has resigned from the Postal Service and agreed to plead guilty, officials said.

Authorities said in June and July there were complaints about mail losses of VA mailings containing prescription medication.

Surveillance was conducted at the Postal Service Processing and Distribution Center in Chattanooga.

On July 27, Ms. Williams was seen by postal inspectors opening a VA package. Inspectors recovered the opened package of medication from her.

She faces up to a year in prison and up to a $100,000 fine.

Prosecutors said they will not oppose a reduction in her sentence because of her acceptance of responsibility.
