Former TWRA Biologist Jack Murrey celebrates to the applause of friends and former co-workers as he received a well-deserved and coveted honor from the National Wild Turkey Federation on Monday.

Former Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Biologist Jack Murrey was honored Monday with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) 2007 Joe Kurz Excellence in Wildlife Management Award.

The Joe Kurz award, presented to Murrey Monday in a special ceremony at TWRA's Nashville headquarters, recognizes wildlife managers who have worked tirelessly for the wild turkey and its habitat.

I had the honor of working with Jack Murrey 25 years ago during my own TWRA days. I spent many hours hunkered in a blind with Murrey, waiting on turkeys to walk in range of a cannon net.

To be honest, I always thought Murrey was a little weird (in a nice way). Never in my career had I met anyone so totally and completely consumed by wild turkeys.

Remember this was in the day when we had very few wild turkeys. Over previous decades there had been previous efforts to restore turkey populations to the wild. All attempts had been miserable failures. I had no reason to believe Murrey's efforts would be any different.

But he knew better. At the time wildlife managers across the country were dicovering the promise of capturing turkeys from existing wild populations to spread across the country, or in case, Tennessee. Jack Murrey fine-tuned TWRA's capture techniques and program to a fine art. He perservered when naysayers said it couldn't be done. Prior to his retirement in 2003, Murrey has been personally instrumental in restocking more than 10,000 wild turkeys across the state of Tennessee. In the Volunteer State he is THE unsung hero.

“If you hunt wild turkeys in Tennessee, Jack Murrey deserves your gratitude,” said Dr. James Earl Kennamer, NWTF senior vice president for conservation programs. “Murrey’s dedication to the wild turkey is an example of why Tennessee enjoys great turkey hunting and will continue to do so in the future.”

The nine whooping cranes led by ultralight aircraft have been released from a holding pen at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge after Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership biologists attached marking bands and transmitters to help track their movements. “So far the cranes are foraging and hanging around close to the pen and moving into the flooded fields,” said Bill Gates, biologist ... Vince Dean Picks Up For Senate Race; Tommie Brown Headed For Contest With JoAnne Favors

Rep. Vince Dean has picked up papers to run for the Senate District 10 seat now held by Democrat Andy Berke. And Rep. Tommie Brown picked up papers to retain her District 28 seat. That sets up a clash with Rep. JoAnne Favors, who picked up for District 28 earlier. Under Republican redistricting, Rep. Favors wound up in the Brown district. Rep. Dean, a Republican from East ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
