Opportunities Available Through United Way’s Volunteer Center

United Way’s Volunteer Center promotes volunteerism across the community in many ways – recruiting volunteers and connecting them with opportunities to serve, publicly recognizing volunteer efforts and directing other programs that mobilize volunteers to address community problems. The Volunteer Center is part of United Way’s Center for Nonprofits which serves as an umbrella organization for the Volunteer Center, Gifts in Kind Chattanooga and united Way 2-1-1, programs which provide non-cash resources to area nonprofit agencies.

Opportunities are available through the following agencies:

AIM Center is in need of outgoing, dedicated volunteers to tutor adults with mental illness in reading and math. Shifts are from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily as available.

Muscular Dystrophy Association needs volunteers to work their annual Stride and Ride event on Saturday, March 11. Volunteers are needed between 8-10 a.m. to assist with check in/out, hand out prizes, supervise food and beverages, face painting and other activities.

Partnership for Families, Children and Adults is looking for qualified volunteers to work in their Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program. All volunteers must complete an orientation and training program, as well as complete background checks. Next training is Feb. 21 – March h.

Tennessee Aquarium is in need of dedicated, mature volunteers to assist divers in the shark tank with general duties including food prep and feeding. Hours needed are weekday afternoons.

Girls Inc. of Chattanooga is looking for dedicated volunteers to make a difference in a girl’s life by mentoring and leading educational activities weekdays from 2-6 p.m.

Creative Discovery Museum is recruiting volunteers ages 18 and over to help with their annual “Amuse” um fundraiser event the evening of Saturday, March 11. Activity stations include: registration, henna tattoos, belly dancing, salsa club, pictures, silent auction and several others. Volunteers get to participate in a volunteer feast at the end of the event.

Animal Care Trust needs volunteers to for Strutt Your Mutt, a two mile canine and people walk in downtown Chattanooga on March 4. Volunteers are needed as early as 6:30 a.m. Volunteers can also help out with the Chattanooga Half Marathon Race taking place that same morning.

Arbor Day Celebrations Scheduled For March 2-3

Lookout Valley, Tn. recorded the first tornado on what would become a historic 2-day tornado outbreak, at 7:55am on April 27, 2011. An EF 2 tornado with winds up to 135mph, damaged buildings, uprooted hundreds of trees and left one dead. Lookout Valley continues to rebuild from that day. Mother Of Man Charged With Killing Sgt. Chapin Given Prison Sentence Of 30 Years, 6 Months

The mother of the man charged with killing Chattanooga Police Sgt. I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt.
