One of the three finalists for superintendent of the Hamilton County Schools has dropped out of the running, saying he is "deeply troubled by the apparent discontent by individuals in the community about the selection process and the candidates."

Dr. Steve Wilmoth, superintendent of the Liberty County Schools at Hinesville, Ga., had been set to be interviewed by the County School Board on Saturday morning along with another contender.

Dr. Wilmoth sent a letter to County School Board Chairman Chip Baker.

Dr. Wilmoth said in the letter sent Wednesday morning, "I write to you this morning with deep regret. I feel I am an outstanding results oriented administrator with a lot to offer. Administrators like me put their reputation and future on the line each time they step into a demanding environment.

"I have been deeply troubled by the apparent discontent by individuals in the community about the selection process and the candidates. I do not wish to deal with a hostile atmosphere when the concentration should be on a focused educational system.

"Let me say I was impressed with the screening process of the committee and their dedication to the future of the school system and its students. I would have been dedicated to fulfilling the expectations of the committee and the board for the future of Chattanooga's students.

"I respectfully withdraw from the search at this time. I will hold a deep sense of pride having been selected and held in high regard by the selection committee."

Mr. Baker said Thursday night, "Wednesday, I received communication from Dr. Steve Wilmoth that he had decided to withdraw from the slate of finalists in the superintendent selection process. Dr. Wilmoth indicated that he would consider this overnight and has informed me today that in fact he has withdrawn from consideration.

"I have informed search committee chairman Tom Kinser of this fact this afternoon. Mr. Kinser will move forward with a 5 p.m. meeting tomorrow to confirm the action of the committee. The Board of Education will receive the recommendation from the committee and will then discuss the recommendation of the committee and any changes in the process it may wish to consider at that time.

"The board does have its first interview with Dr. Jim Scales tomorrow evening and Saturday with Dr. Bruce Harter."

The withdrawal comes after some wrangling over the appointment with some County Commission members saying a local candidate should be chosen.

Commissioner Charlotte Vandergriff said Thursday morning, "I certainly hope that the current personal, contentious political climate regarding the school superintendent selection does not cause all candidates to withdraw. It begs the question of why one would want to be here."

Remaining candidates are Dr. Jim Scales, deputy superintendent for administrative services for the Dallas Independent School District at College Station, Tex., and Dr. Bruce Harter, superintendent of the Brandywine School District in Claymont, Del.
