Vernon Earl Payne

Korean War Veteran Retired From Corley Manufacturing

Vernon Earl Payne, 73, died on Friday, April 28, 2006, at his residence.

He was born in Cameronsville, AL, to the late Jerry Alexander and Elizabeth Price Payne and was preceded in death by his sons, Michael and Randy Alexander; brother, Robert Payne; and sister, Stella Jacob.

He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Rossville, and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from Corley Manufacturing after 41 years of service.

He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Irona Faye Payne; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Anita Payne, of Rossville, Jack and Theresa Payne, of Ringgold, Tracy Payne, of Rossville, Terry and Tonya Alexander; brother, Charles L. Payne, of Steiger, IL; four grandchildren, Beth Payne, Cynthia Bailey, Holly and Aaron Alexander; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, in the chapel with the Rev. Jim Bennett and the Rev. Kenneth McLehaney officiating. Interment will follow in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park with military honors.

The family will receive friends after 4 p.m. Saturday, all day Sunday and prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

Mark Phillips Was Victim In Fatal Hixson Pike Wreck

Mark Phillips, 54, was the victim in a fatal Hixson Pike wreck on Saturday afternoon. Police said the driver of the Ford F150 that went out of control and struck the Phillips vehicle was 68-year-old Warren Elliott.
