Mark Lucas, 58, a native Chattanoogan, died Monday, May 1, 2006.
A Duke University graduate, he was an active advocate and worker for community mental health support. He worked as Consumer Advocate for Volunteer Behavioral Health Care and its Johnson Mental Health Center. He was a member of the state TennCare Partners Roundtable and the Regional Mental Health Planning and Policy Council, as well as a facilitator for the Chattanooga Pendulums Bipolar Support Group. In 1998 he served as President of the Mental Health Association.
In 2004, he was recognized for Outstanding Contributions by the Tennessee Mental Health Consumers Association.
A descendant of both the Mayflower Society and the Jamestown Society, he was also a legacy member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He lived and worked in Latin America and Europe.
Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Valgene Kelley Purdie and his father, Chester L. Lucas.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Pink Lucas; his sister, Mary Purdie Lambeth; nephew, Justin Lambeth; niece, Jennavieve Lambeth; and Isabel Lucas, his stepmother.
There will be a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Chattanooga Funeral Home - North Chapel, followed by internment of the cremated remains at Varner Cemetery in Soddy Daisy.
The family will receive friends from 4–7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, Chicago, Illinois.
