MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Baylor's Bo Seal, GPS's Claire Bartlett and the McCallie doubles team of Wes Nelson and Charlie Ramsay won Division II state tennis titles Thursday afternoon.
Seal, a freshman, defeated William Lang of Memphis University School, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2).
Bartlett, a sophomore, beat St. Agnes' Ashley Murdock, 6-3, 6-1.
Nelson and Ramsay defeated the MUS team of Will Carter and Michael Willis, 6-4, 6-2.
In another final, Webb's doubles team of Guinn Garcia and Berkeley Brock beat GPS's Courtney Pare and Grace Robinette, 6-4, 6-0.
SEAL: The singles title was special for Seal, who had to be taken to a local hospital after suffering severe cramps in a team match Tuesday night. He won that match, but Baylor lost the team championship to rival McCallie.
"Bo is not 100 percent,'' Baylor coach Philip Johnson said. "He's still feeling it, but he's fine. That was quite an ordeal.
"He put a lot of hard work in this year and this is a good way to finish it off. He's very good. I'd have to say he's one of the best to come through Chattanooga in a long time.''
BARTLETT: Claire Bartlett, the daughter of GPS coach Sue Bartlett, won her first state title.
"Claire was a little flat for a part of the championship match, but she got it done,'' coach Bartlett said. "She may have been a little tired. We won the team so late Tuesday night and had to get up early on Wednesday.
"We tried to rest them, but there was really not a lot of time for rest.''
Coach Bartlett said her stomach was hurting after the match.
"I didn't think I was that nervous, but maybe I was,'' she said. "Tennis is a lonely sport, and we wanted Claire to have this high school experience.
"She said when her team was in that huddle celebrating the championship Tuesday night that it was one of the happiest moments of her life.''
