It's tempting to describe Astro as a perfect lap dog, if it weren't for the fact that having Astro jump onto your lap would probably tip you out of your chair. Yet despite his large size, Astro has a calm and friendly demeanor. He's also house trained.

Astro's Labrador Retriever and St. Bernard mix gives him a short smooth coat, brown eyes and a long tail. His coat is brown and white and accented by two droopy ears.

Kennel workers say he likes getting baths before going to PetSmart. Astro walks well on a leash and likes people and children.

To meet Astro, visit the Humane Society Kennel in Chattanooga (Animal Reference Code 78051A).

Kennel hours are 11-4 Monday thru Saturday with an extra two hours each Thursday, 11-6.

The Humane Society is located at 212 N. Highland Park Avenue in Chattanooga. The phone is 624-5302.

The Humane Society needs volunteers! Weekend help is needed at the Society's adoption stations at PetSmart on Gunbarrel Road and the Adoption Option at Northgate Mall. Helpers assist with bathing, loading and unloading animals on the bus, setting up exercise pens and manning the adoption stations. Call 624-5302 or email hespetfinder@comcast.net.

PetSmart hours: 11-9 Saturdays, 12-6 Sundays (helpers needed beginning at 8 a.m. for preparation; volunteers are welcome for all shifts).

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
