Mitchell, Ables, Meeks, Lasley Named Judicial Commissioners

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

The County Commission on Wednesday chose Yolanda Mitchell as the chief judicial commissioner.

Larry Ables, Bob Meeks and Marty Lasley were named as regular judicial commissioners.

The chief makes $63,000 and the other judicial commissioners get $58,000 under the new setup.

They will have one-year terms rather than the four-year terms for those just completing their terms.

The judicial commissioners set bonds and sign warrants on nights and weekends at the County Jail.

James Anderson, a current judicial commissioner, had been a top choice of two committees that studied a field that initially included 20 candidates.

However, Mr. Anderson came under fire this week for setting a $500 bond on an assault case against a county deputy. The total bond on three charges was $1,500.

He only got votes from Greg Beck, John Brooks and Warren Mackey.

Mr. Ables, an assistant district attorney, got eight votes. His uncle, Commissioner Larry Henry, abstained.

Ms. Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, got support from all commissioners except Richard Casavant.

Mr. Meeks, who is the current chief judicial commissioner, also got votes from all commissioners except Commissioner Casavant.

Mr. Lasley, who has worked as an assistant city and county attorney, got support from Commissioners Henry, Curtis Adams, Greg Beck, Jim Coppinger, Fred Skillern and Bill Hullander.

Commissioners said they want the judicial commissioners to have access to NCIC records. Sheriff Billy Long said he will look into that issue.
