Trey Lefler, a member of the staff of Sen. Lamar Alexander who was involved in a serious car accident near Knoxville earlier this week, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Lefler was the brother of Laura Lefler, press secretary for Sen. Bob Corker.
Both the Alexander and Corker Senate staffs said they "are saddened by this tragic loss."
Sen. Corker said, “Our state has lost an outstanding young man today.
“Trey Lefler’s commitment to public service has made Tennessee stronger and his warm smile and genuine care and compassion for others brightened every room he entered. On this Thanksgiving day, we celebrate all that he accomplished in his short life and continue to remember the Lefler family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Mr. Lefler, 25, of Loudon, was involved in an accident three days earlier in which Maryville College assistant football coach Shawn Jeremiah Cody Bowers, 25, of Madisonville, was killed.
Mr. Lefler went through the windshield in the wreck near Maryville College.
Authorities said speeding on a wet road led to the crash.
