City To Install Speed Cameras At 7 Intersections

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

The city of Chattanooga is getting ready to roll out speed cameras at seven intersections, City Traffic Engineer John Van Winkle told the City Council on Tuesday afternoon.

The first location will be the intersection of North Moore and Brainerd roads in Brainerd.

Mr. Van Winkle said all seven locations will be set up "very quickly" - including one at Pine Street and MLK Boulevard near the I-124 (U.S. 27) freeway.

A 30-day introduction period will begin Thursday. Traffic violators photographed between that date and Jan. 11 will receive a warning.

Beginning Jan. 12, citations will be issued to violators.

Just as with the speeding cameras that are already in use, those caught in violations will be sent $50 tickets.

Mr. Van Winkle said the aim is "to make the streets safer" rather than revenue collection.

He said signs will be posted in the vicinity of the cameras. He said, "We are not out to surprise anybody. We want to persuade them to change their habits."

Mr. Van Winkle said there will be two cameras at North Moore and Brainerd - one for eastbound traffic and another for southbound traffic.

He said the speeding cameras have been a success. The city has speed cameras at the Hixson Pike S Curves as well as some mobile cameras that are moved from location to location.

Mr. Van Winkle said the first week after the speed cameras were placed on the S Curves there were over 900 citations. He said it is down to fewer than 100 a week.

He said, "I drive the S Curves every day. It's a lot more pleasant going through there now."

Thoughs On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
