Chattanooga firefighters were dispatched to a small high rise fire during the lunch hour Tuesday, and no one was injured after a kitchen fire was extinguished.
The fire occurred at Whiteside's Faith Manor at 735 E. 10th St. around 12:30 p.m.
Capt. Tally Glover with Quint 2 said nothing was visible from the outside when the first firefighters arrived on the scene. Once inside the eight-story building, the firefighters discovered smoke on the sixth floor.
While some firefighters worked to evacuate the residents on the sixth floor, other firefighters soon located the apartment unit that was on fire. Capt. Glover said the fire was in the kitchen, and appeared to have started on the stove. The flames had spread to the cabinets above, but Capt. Glover said firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in a couple of minutes.
The fire damage was contained to the kitchen, but there was some smoke damage to that unit and some adjacent apartment units.
No fire-related injuries were reported, but Battalion Chief Mike Baronavski said one woman complained of difficulty breathing. The woman was checked out by paramedics with Hamilton County EMS, but she was not transported.
Chief Baronavski said the cause of the fire will be listed as accidental, due to food being left unattended on the stove. Chattanooga police also provided assistance on the scene.
