Two Duplexes Burn On Same Block Saturday Night

Sunday, February 25, 2007

Chattanooga firefighters responded to a reported duplex fire Saturday night just before 10:00 at 837 Arlington Ave.

As Ladder 5 responded to the scene, the firefighters discovered that another duplex was on fire at the end of the same block, at 808 Arlington Ave.

Captain David Scoggins with Ladder 5 decided to stop at that location and requested additional fire companies to help handle the two fires.

Captain Marvin Hudgins with Engine 4 said the firefighters were able to contain most of the fire damage to one of the two units at 837 Arlington. The dollar loss was estimated at $5,000.

At 808 Arlington, Captain Scott Davis said the firefighters also contained most of the fire damage to one unit, but the fire did get into the attic before being extinguished. The dollar loss was also estimated at $5,000.

The cause of both fires is suspicious in nature, officials said. Both structures were reportedly vacant, but eyewitnesses saw two men in a white pickup truck speeding away from the scene. Lieutenant Henry McElvain and Captain Lesley Morgan with the Fire Investigation Division are conducting the investigation.

No injuries were reported in connection with either fire.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
