Lee University School of Music faculty members Douglas Warner, trombone, and Michael Wittenburg, piano will join with guest performers Prentiss Hobbs, trombone, Michael Carver, bass trombone, and John Burroughs, trombone, to present a recital entitled “Trombone Favorites Across the Centuries,” on Monday, March 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Squires Recital Hall.
The recital will feature Concerto for Alto Trombone by Johann Albrechtsberger, Sontina by Kazimierz Serocki, Sonata by Eric Ewazen, performed by Douglas Warner and Michael Wittenburg, and Fanfare, Pavan and Fughetta, by Gordon Jacob, Achieved is the Glorious Work by Franz Joseph Haydn, No More Blues by Antonio Carlos Jobim performed by Douglas Warner, Prentiss Hobbs, Michael Carver, and John Burroughs.
The Fanfare, Pavanne and Fughetta by Jacob Gordon is a piece designed for the alto, tenor, and bass trombone, and the last piece No More Blues demonstrates jazz on the trombone. “I have chosen a program that will reflect to the audience the variety of both style periods and genres available to the trombone soloist and chamber musician,” said Warner. “Every one of these works has both artistic merit and wide audience appeal.”
Doug Warner, an assistant professor of music at Lee, has also been principal trombonist of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera since 1985. He has been a frequent substitute with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra he has also performed with the Dayton Philharmonic, the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, and the Northern Kentucky Symphony.
Michael Shane Wittenburg is in his fourth season as music director of the Lee University Chamber Orchestra and his sixth year as music director of the Lee University Opera Theatre. He has made solo appearances with the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Wittenburg is also a violinist in the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, the organist at Christ United Methodist Church, and has served as the interim Conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Prentiss Hobbs has performed as principal trombone for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra since 1991, and has appeared as a soloist in 1998. Hobbs has performed with many orchestras throughout the region, including those of Nashville, Chattanooga, Memphis, Knoxville and Baton Rouge. He is a noted studio musician and has recorded with such artists as Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.
Michael Carver has been bass trombonist of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra since 1995. He holds both the B.S. in Music Education and B.M. in Trombone from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, as well as the M.M. in Trombone from Georgia State University.
John Burroughs is the Director of Bands at McMinn County High School in Athens, TN. He is active as a freelance trombonist in Athens, Cleveland, and Chattanooga, TN.
