Medical personnel testified Tuesday in General Sessions Court about burns to 11-month-old Gregory Scott Schwarzburg, Jr.
His father, Gregory Scott Schwarzburg, is facing charges of aggravated child abuse in connection with burns suffered by the child. He remains in jail under $125,000 bond.
Dr. Cindy Harris, a pediatrician, said the child was brought to her office on May 28 with burns to the back of the head, the neck, back and buttocks.
She said the mother stated "that the dad had not sought any treatment."
Dr. Harris said when she saw the child the burns "were several, several days old."
She said by the time she saw him on June 5 he had some staph infection.
The mother is currently in the hospital with staph infection. The completion of the hearing was delayed to allow her to testify. Dr. Harris said a sibling also got a staph infection.
She said the second-degree burns had "edges that were well defined. I did not see any splash marks."
She said the child may or may not suffer scarring, and she said quick treatment is needed to help prevent infection.
Rebecca Chapman, an RN at Hutcheson Medical Center, said she was in the emergency room when the child was brought in around 1:15 a.m. on May 26.
She said the boy was playful and active at first, then "cried a lot when we put on the dressing."
She said the burn must have occurred "at least two days before."
The mother of the child, Jamie Whitmore, told police she dropped off the boy to stay with Schwarzburg from May 21-25.
She said when she picked him up at 4006 12th Ave. she noticed burns on the child.
Ms. Whitmore said Schwarzburg told her the boy had been burned in hot water on May 23.
Ms. Whitmore said the father had not taken the boy to the hospital, but she took him directly to the hospital.
