Classes have been canceled at Middle Tennessee State University until next Wednesday after a series of threats.
MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee said Thursday, "A credible threat to the MTSU campus has been identified. As a result, classes have been canceled, effective as of noon today, for the remainder of the week.
"Due to a series of threatening e-mails and suspicious fires, campus police, in cooperation with local and state law-enforcement agencies, are actively involved in an investigation.
"During this time, security will increase on campus, but university offices will maintain normal business hours. Employees are encouraged to report any unusual or suspicious activity to MTSU police.
"After the regularly scheduled fall break, classes will resume Wednesday, Oct. 15.
"Please be safe and look out for one another. And please report any suspicious behavior or activity to University Police at 898-2424."
Gov. Phil Bredesen said, "Today's events at MTSU are troubling, and I hope this incident can be resolved quickly for the safety of our students, faculty and staff. The University's prompt actions today are absolutely warranted, and I commend them for taking these measures to protect the University community.
"Unfortunately we have learned that at times like this, the best path is to err on the side of caution."
