Mumpower Elected To Lead House Republicans; McDaniel Is Caucus Chairman

Monday, December 01, 2008

Rep. Jason Mumpower (R-Bristol) was elected Monday to lead the House Republican Caucus in the Tennessee House of Representatives for the 106th General Assembly. The leader was chosen in elections as the group met to organize its business in Nashville for the 2009-2010 legislative session.

“I pledge to continue an open-style leadership that will lead a unified caucus,” said Rep. Mumpower after being re-elected leader. “I am humbled and honored to be chosen to lead our caucus as we move forward. We look forward to rolling our sleeves up and getting to work for the people of Tennessee.”

Also elected to the top leadership posts were Rep. Steve McDaniel (R-Parkers Crossroads) as Caucus chairman, Rep. Glen Casada (R-College Grove) as assistant leader, Rep. Kevin Brooks (R-Cleveland) as Caucus vice chairman, Rep. Debra Maggart (R-Hendersonville) as whip, Rep. Jon Lundberg (R-Bristol) as floor leader, Rep. Judd Matheny (R-Tullahoma) as secretary, Rep. Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald) as treasurer, and Rep. Barrett Rich (R-Somerville) as assistant floor leader.

House Republican Caucus bylaws dictate that the Republican Leader shall be the caucus’ nominee for Speaker of the House in January. The Caucus Chairman will be the nominee for Speaker Pro Tempore. If they are elected to those positions, the caucus will then hold another election to replace the Republican Leader and Caucus chairman positions.

The legislative session is scheduled to begin at high noon on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

“I am looking forward to serving the House Republicans on leadership,” said Rep Brooks. “As Vice Caucus chairman, I will work to fulfill the needs of the Caucus as they arise and assume the responsibility of the Caucus chairman in his absence. I am humbled and honored that my colleagues have entrusted this responsibility to me.”

“We appreciate Rep. Brook’s hard work on the behalf of our Caucus, and I certainly look forward to having him around the leadership table,” said Rep. Mumpower. “He is a man of great integrity."

Thoughs On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
