In an economy where some colleges and universities are cutting costs and shutting down departments to stay afloat, Southern Adventist University announced the lowest tuition increase in 12 years for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The average increase in tuition at private four-year institutions this year was 5.9 percent according to a Wall Street Journal article by Eric Gibson. Southern’s tuition increase is well below the average at 3.49 percent.
Students and parents have expressed appreciation for the low increase of tuition. Sally Snyder Jewell, mother of junior psychology major Emily Jewell, said, “At a time when bill collectors abound for most tuition-poor families, it was indeed refreshing to...know that not everyone has his hand out in these difficult economic times.”
