Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga joins forces with Coptix, green|spaces, Collier Construction and architect Thomas Palmer to build Chattanooga’s first LEED Certified Habitat House for a Sudanese refugee, Baja Dalla, and his family. The Southside Habitat House is being constructed this week at the former Union Gospel Mission Lot on the corner of Main and Market.

Local green-building leaders green|spaces, Collier Construction and architect Thomas Palmer have collaborated with Habitat for Humanity to design and build the LEED Certified Southside Habitat House—a healthy and energy efficient home that will use less energy, water and natural resources.

Collier Construction is funding the LEED Certification process and providing carpenters on site throughout construction to educate volunteers and workers about LEED for Homes building procedures and methods.

Chattanooga web and graphic design firm, Coptix, has organized its annual Christmas party as a fundraiser benefiting Habitat for Humanity and the Southside Habitat House. The event is officially titled INHABIT and will serve as the grand finale for Mainx24, the Southside’s annual 24-hour holiday event scheduled for Saturday.

The Southside Habitat House will be given to Mr. Dalla who has nearly completed his 300 hours of “sweat equity” service and home-ownership and personal finance classes at Habitat. Mr. Dalla grew up in the Sudan and scantly survived the civil war that claimed his parents and siblings’ lives.

After living in a refugee camp in Ethiopia for many years, Mr. Dalla and his wife relocated to the U.S. and were referred to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga.

Following the Mainx24 Parade, the house will be opened for the neighborhood, volunteers and others to tour and welcome the Dalla family to the Southside.

Roy Exum: Tennessee’s ‘Saint’ Turns 50

Back when I was in my late 20s, still really dumb but all eager to make a difference in the world, I got tangled up in a life-changing caper late one night. A close friend called and frantically asked if I knew anybody who had a private plane. She said a real sick child needed to get to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis  – it was desperate -- and the life-or-death ... (click for more)
