LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Throughout his Major League career, Javy Lopez had always been a catcher whose offensive skills negated his defensive deficiencies enough for him to remain employed. When he became unemployed after Spring Training last year, the 37-year-old catcher realized he could either focus on his defense or settle into a life of retirement.

Three times a week during November and December, Lopez worked on basic defensive skills with Braves bench coach Chino Cadahia. At the same time, Lopez remained dedicated to a strict conditioning program. The results have been evident -- he's looked rejuvenated during the first few days of Spring Training.

Having not played after being released by the Rockies in Spring Training last year, Lopez wasn't even on the Braves radar until Cadahia started providing some positive reports. A three-time All-Star while playing in Atlanta from 1993-2003, he's in camp as a non-roster invitee and the understanding that he'll be filling a backup role.

Much slimmer than he was during the 43-homer season he enjoyed in Atlanta in 2003, Lopez's physical appearance is similar to the one he had when he claimed National League Championship Series MVP honors with the Braves in 1996.

Some of the women who have adored Lopez throughout his career have already made their way to camp to get a glimpse of him.

Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: What 17 Pills Did To Me

Ah, step into my parlor of first-hand wisdom because, in the School of Hard Knocks, there are priceless lessons that you should know before it becomes your turn to dance. Never in my life have I ever had any back problems but, in early December, I came down with what is called sciatica and I have been a miserable man ever since. There are two big nerves that sprout out of the ... (click for more)
