  • Allen Baugh, an understandably proud father, sends this picture of his son Garrett, with his first buck taken with a bow this season.

  • David Treadway sends this awesome picture he calls "Buck Crossing." David was in the right place at the right time as this buck scooted across the road chasing a doe. The Tennessee Department of Safety cautions motorists to watch out for deer, especially during the months prone to deer-related crashes, October through December.” This is why.

  • Keith Oldaker arrowed this nice 8-pointer. As the story goes however, Oldaker had a hard time tracking the deer so he called in the services of a friend, Bruce Majors, who has a German Jag Terrier... a fine tracking dog. They put the little dog on the trail and found the buck in less than an hour.

  • Kenny Hyde, Tony Taylor, Pete Vandusen are all firemen with the Cleveland Fire Department. Earlier this year they had an incredible trip to the White River in the Ozark Mountain Region of Arkansas. If you decide to go there, the Editor recommends you stay at Gaston's Resort.

  • Eric Almy (front row, center) shares the results of a March hunt at Mann Mountain Outfitters near Guntersville, Ala. The group was from Shoals Outdoor Sports-Tuscumbia Ala. The largest hog (far left) weighed in at 210.

  • Roswell Schnur sends this photo of an 11-foot, 7-inch alligator he and his partner Kevin Beaty took in South Georgia. The beast weighed about 500 lbs. They also took a smaller gator that was a mere 6' 7". Understandably Schnur said, "It was a exciting and fun hunt."

  • Kay Woods shows off a fine shellcracker. She and her husband Keith (next picture) spend many days on the water chasing bream and shellcrackers.

  • As Keith Woods says however, "accidents will happen." He caught this fine channel cat while bream fishing. No doubt it put up quite a battle on light tackle.

  • Julie Schuster, as a National Wild Turkey Federation sponsor with Bass Pro Shops in Nashville, was assisting with release of some wild turkeys to kick off the 30th annual National Convention and Sport Show. Second grade students from Donelson Christian Academy enjoy the event. The cameraman on the right is TWRA's Doug Markham as he videotaped the release.

  • Marty Paige writes, "I work at the Unum office downtown in the West building. Last week we were treated to this visiting Barred Owl sitting in a tree outside one of the conference rooms on 3 West which overlooks 6th street. He created quite a stir and a good number of employees got to see him up close and personal. I happened to have my camera and 400mm lens with me that day and was able to get a few shots of him."

  • Harold Sharp writes, "Last year a hawk went after a dove on my feeder which is about 5 feet from my dining room window, the dove hit the window at 90 mph and left a powder image on the window. It is a dry powder that just wipes off. The dove survived."

  • Marty Paige writes, "I bought a glass hummingbird feeder this summer from the Kennedy Glass Studio, a local business. They make these beautiful glass feeders. I took several pictures of hummingbirds using these feeders and this is my favorite. I really love the pink in the feeder. Two beautiful creations, one natural and one man made."

  • Billy Swan is understandably proud of this 13-point monster whitetail taken at the Dunaway Hunting & Fishing Club on the Cumberland Plateau. The deer scored 155 and 3/8.

  • My name is Jim Patterson. My wife, Jenny, and I lived in Chattanooga for forty years before moving to Terre Haute, Indiana ten years ago. This is a picture of my daughter, Morgan Patterson, 13, with her first deer ever. Her grandmother lives on Lookout Mountain and we have a lot of friends in Chattanooga. Her deer weighed 138 lbs field dressed. One shot with a .410 on November 17, 2007.

  • Thought I'd send a pic of our take from opening day on Nickajack Lake. I (John Capp) hunted with Ed Burger, Tom Hackney and Alan Tonkin. We got our limit by 9:30! A mixed bag of gadwall, canvasback, bluebill, ringnecks, and one greenwing teal. The dog is 'Duke' and he belongs to Alan. Duke retrieved almost all the birds and even had a double on one retrieve!   • Larry Self, an Outdoor Writer and member of the Redhead Pro Staff from Mosheim, Tenn., took this monstrous whitetail on a recent hunt in Iowa on the 2007 Knight Rifle Invitational Hunt. Self was using a Knight KP-1 Muzzleloader.

  • Gil Lackey writes, "Tried to get the draw on some hens that would not have come into range anyway, but they busted me cold and skedaddled. A couple hours later, I heard the gobblers coming from a long way away, had time to set up and draw, and got lucky at about 20 yards. They knew something was up and were headed out, but the lead bird came out from behind a tree to take one last peek. 20 lbs., 10-inch beard, 1 1/4 inch spurs."

  • Mandy Hyde of Bristol, Tenn. Her Dad, David Hyde, took her hunting in West Tenn over the Thanksgiving holidays. Here she is with limit of mallards and one speck. Looks like Mandy has waterfowling in her blood.

  • A few hardcore Tennessee Trout Unlimited supporters took time out for some deer hunting recently. (l-r) Gil Lackey, Mike Burke and Jack Russell. Had a good day... Lackey with a 10-pointer and Russell with a seven, both taken Christmas Eve. Lackey said, "In many years of hunting, I've never seen any evidence of a second rut. These bucks weren't chasing, but they were cruising mid-day and reeked of love."

  • NASA Engineer Ellis (Mat) Bevill Jr. with a 23.5-inch, 6 lb. 7 oz. monster Pickwick smallmouth. Ellis Bevill, Sr. writes (of this and previous 2 pictures), "When the wind and ever so slow dam generation was OK, they managed to catch fish. Mat's came from the back side of 7 Mile Island in Little River where they were, to get out of the wind. No current, but got the big fish to bite a tube. Over all a fairly successful trip." I would say so.

  • Here is a rainbow trout I caught during a lunchtime break from hunting at Dunaway. I didn't get any measurements but you can see from the picture it is a pretty good fish, caught with 4# test, 5' Lamiglass ultralight with a white Roostertail.

  • Joe Walker and friends went to Rellfoot Lake duck hunting Dec. 21-23. Joe writes, "52 ducks ... we suffered through a couple of warm days but ended up having a pretty good shoot the last day. Had good wind all weekend which provided for ducks finishing well. Lake Isom and Black Bayou refuges are absolutely loaded with ducks and should provide for good shooting throughout the rest of the season. Had a mixed bag of green wings, woodies, widgeon, and mallards."

  • (l-r) Ed Burger, Tom Hackney and Scot Hackney hunted Oakwood Hunting Club at Horseshoe Lake in Southern Illinois on January 2nd and 3rd. Hackney says, "We limited on mallards on Wednesday but only killed 2 widgeon and a mallard on Thursday. All of the water was frozen both days but the ducks had figured it out by Thursday. Several geese were killed on the club Thursday as well. The highlight of Thursday was watching at least 20,000-plus mallards working a flooded field about a quarter of a mile away. They flew out in mass for about 15 minutes at first light and then constantly dropped back in by the hundreds all day long."

  • Gil Lackey had a trail camera near his Middle Tennessee home. He provided several pictures. This was my favorite. Gil writes, "Thought this was kind of cool. I got it with the trail cam last night behind my house.

  • Here is a picture from a rabbit hunt in Carroll County, TN. This was my son Caleb’s first rabbit hunt. The next time you see him ask him what a “SWAMP rabbit” is. I promise you’ll get a kick out him explanation.

  • Erik Almy writes, "After dealing with extremely dense fog in the morning, I caught a 14-pound and this 18-pound Striper on Saturday using artificial bait below Watts Bar Dam. It is my largest striper to date."

  • Terry Richardson , a Chattanooga Ducks Unlimited Volunteer with a double on Canada’s he shot on Chickamauga Lake.

  • Hunter Almy, 14, couldn't get the catfish to cooperate, so he improvised. This was one of a dozen monster skipjack (AKA, Tennessee Tarpon) he and his partners caught at the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant discharge throwing a sabiki rig.

  • Ed McCoy took this shot of Alex Baker (w/ducks) and Ross Malone on the Kids-Only Duck Hunt Day. Ed writes, "I really enjoyed my morning with Mr. Alex Baker. He is going to be one special duck hunter. As you can see he limited out. It took just a shade over 30 minutes. He actually had a double. His bag included 5 gadwalls and one hen mallard. He's already accomplished more than most adults do in a life time. Keep it up Alex.

  • Brook Dunn shares the following story: Last Hunt of the season. 2007-2008 - 4 mallards, 5 teal. Late December, Weiner, Ark. - we got out of bed at around 5:00 o''clock to make breakfast. It was still dark out and the house was almost under water. The pond behind the house had flooded and was now surrounding the house. We had to put waders on just to walk around outside. The wind was coming out of the west and was really chilling. We canoed to the blind and sat down, loaded the guns and ready to shoot right at shooting time. The blind faces west, and the wind was right in our face and really cold. So after the first light of day, a group of teal fly by that sound like a jet engine. It was still too early and to dark to see to get a clear shot. We got excited. A another group of teal came, the wind brought them right in our face. We raise up and "boom, boom, boom." 5 teal drop. After the last shot all the guys laugh and scream "Hell yea, it's going to be a good hunt today boys!" After retrieving the teal we sit back in the blind trying to stay warm. The coffee can only do so much. Later on in the day a group of about fifty mallards come from the south, and buddy, this was one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen. Textbook duck hunting. They cupped up and ready to sit down. Right as they flew past the blind we all unloaded and dropped four greenheads. The day was slower after that. The wind settled down which I think led them to settle in fields rather that woods. When the wind is blowing they like be in the woods it's a little warmer. Weiner, Arkansas is a great place to hunt. Some days are better than others but it's all about just getting out in the timber and hunting some ducks. Me and my friends live for duck season and cherish what Ducks Unlimited is doing for the wetlands all around the world. Thanks for all you do and letting me share my short story. Brook Dunn

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt.
