A black bear was killed less than a mile from the Bradley County Courthouse last night. It was hit and killed by a vehicle at 1310 South Lee Hwy., just west of Bradley County High School.
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency Officer Ben Davis said, "I was really surprised this bear got so far into civilization without having been seen. We get lots of reports of bear sightings when they get close to (Cleveland) but we hadn't heard anything about this one. And he didn't just leave the mountains yesterday."
Davis said the young male bear (less than 2 years old) weighed about 115 pounds and was in extremely good condition. He says that young male bears frequently are the ones that get into trouble when they have to go out and find or establish their own territory.
Davis said they do not know who hit and killed the bear. They left the scene... Davis said most likely with significant damage to their vehicle. TWRA does not intend to investigate further.
