William Lee Butterfield died at home May 23, 2008 after a brief illness.
He was born in Lima, Ohio May 2, 1930, and was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Dora (Naylor) Butterfield.
He is survived by his wife Martha (Everhart); sons Richard and Daniel (Debbie) of Chattanooga; grandsons Christofer and Colby of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; sisters Lucy (Larry) Gordon of West Chester Ohio; Jean (Harold) Best of Lima; aunt Sylvia Reiff; several nephews, and special family friend, JoAnn Glennie.
He was a graduate of Ohio Northern University, Garrett Theological Seminary and the Ohio State University. He served as minister to youth at North Broadway Methodist Church in Columbus, Ohio, and as professor of education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Bill touched many lives with his gifts of guidance and leadership; combined with caring and a lively sense of humor. A teacher and mentor to many educators, he was also a consultant to local public and private schools, the Junior League, Chamber of Commerce, Boys and Girls Clubs, the National Boys Club, and he served on and chaired evaluation teams for the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Bill also started the first Mayor’s Youth Commission and the Upward Bound Program at UTC, where he was active on faculty committees and received many awards for outstanding teaching and public service.
The family thanks the nurses at Memorial Hospital and Adventa Hospice for their kindness and care.
