Monday, May 05, 2008 - by B.B. Branton

Senior Andy Shuford's game-winning double drove in Tyler Massey in the bottom of the seventh inning as host Baylor scored twice in the last inning to defeat McCallie, 4-3, in a TSSAA Division II East District playoff baseball game Monday.

Baylor's Dylan Craig led off the home half of the seventh with a single to left and scored to tie the game at 3 on Massey's double to right center. Massey then scored the game winner on Shuford's short fly ball down the leftfield foul line.

The two teams meet again Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Baylor. If McCallie wins Tuesday, it would force a third and deciding game for the East District title on Wednesday at Baylor at 5 p.m.

“This was a great game and I am proud of our guys for coming back in the last inning,’’ said Baylor coach Gene Etter. ‘’We have to commend McCallie for a well played game, knowing that the last game with them here (April 9) we won 10-0 with Tyler throwing a no-hitter (with six strikeouts).’’

Tonight, Massey struck out five McCallie batters, walked four, allowed six hits and two earned runs.

McCallie starter Chase Brookshire (5-2) allowed four runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking three.

Baylor took a 2-0 lead in the third as a pair of doubles by Chase Reimer and Massey sandwiched around a strikeout produced one run. Massey scored the second on a two-out RBI single by Isaac Edmonds.

McCallie tied it in the top of the fourth on John Brock’s two-out, two-run single driving in Taylor Smith and Stuart Voges. Smith reached on a one-out walk followed by Voges’ single, his 25th hit of the season.

The Blue Tornado took its only lead at 3-2, with a run in the top of the seventh.

James Campbell reached first on a one-out walk and advanced to second on an errant pick off throw by Massey. Campbell later scored on Brookshire’s single.

“Chase pitched a great game today, but we came up a run short,’’ said McCallie coach Chris Richardson. “I told the guys after the game that the last game with Baylor is the one that counts. Not the first, nor the second one, but the last one.’’

Missed Opportunities: McCallie - First Inning: Blue and White loaded the bases with two outs – Brookshire’s walk and singles by Matt Vischetti and Smith, but Voges grounded out to end the inning. Thoughs On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
