Bilyeu Says Humane Society To Remain Strong Despite New Center

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Humane Educational Society Executive Director Guy Bilyeu said his agency will remain strong despite the upcoming opening of the McKamey Animal Care and Adoption Center in Hixson.

The HES is losing city of Chattanooga funding, and Mr. Bilyeu said his agency tightened its belt and made some staff reductions after losing $560,000 from its budget.

But he said the facility has made notable improvements and has raised $1 million in private donations and grants over the past five years.

HES is asking the county to raise its donation level to $4.92 per citizen.

He said East Ridge pays $10 per citizen and the city of Chattanooga $7.50.

The request of the county is to go from $299,434 to $431,076.

County Commissioner Richard Casavant said the county will have "two big (animal) operations. I do wish we could find a way to work together."

Thoughs On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
